SCRUM is a community where men come together to
– express true Christian love
– build real, intentional relationships
– humbly challenge thoughts
– and expose the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
SCRUM is a term taken from the rugby pitch where men are arm and arm, shoulder to shoulder, in the mud and muck of life, fighting to move forward. Such a unity can be built by men focused on love, intentionality, and vulnerability, which fosters depth and genuine relationships. Sometimes, that looks like challenging thoughts and opinions, not out of pride or from a “know it all” kind of attitude, but from humility and love. In a very practical sense, these kinds of conversations demonstrate what it says in Proverbs 27:17: “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
The purpose of SCRUM is to be forging solid men. This is our tagline and it is our aim. We want to have a time when men of all shapes and sizes come together to be built up. We want this to be all kinds of men, from all kinds of places and all kinds of churches. More specifically, we are building men up to walk as men of God. Where other men’s groups and bible studies focus on head knowledge, SCRUM focuses more on matters of the heart. SCRUM is not a Bible study or a place to discuss theological stances, but instead it is a place of love for us to build each other up in our understanding of life and our creator.
SCRUM also is an acronym: Spirit Created Reconciliation and Unity among Men. Our desire is to see God reconcile men to himself and men to other men. Through this reconciliation, we want to see the unity among the ENTIRE body of Christ in our valley expand. We want to see men grow in understanding what bearing God’s image as men really means in a practical sense and in light of the Gospel.
The Gospel, at its core, is relational. The key thing God wants from us is relationship with us. A pillar of His New Kingdom is restored relationship between Him and us. The fruits of this new relationship with God spread to our relationships with each other. SCRUM is a place for men to build and model restored relationships with each other in a way that reflects the incarnational relationality of the gospel of Jesus. We get real. We build one another up. We challenge one another. We laugh. We cry. We forgive. We encourage each other to love and good works. It actually ends up being fun. All for God’s glory.
